Towards a multidisciplinary approach in creative subtitling

Standard subtitling practices have long been influenced, if not governed, by norms and conventions such as the Code of Good Subtitling Practice (Ivarsson & Carroll 1998). Yet recent research into film subtitling has begun to take a creative turn: a trend that is matched by increasing numbers of fansubs and professionally produced creative subtitles. This paper seeks to demonstrate the need for a multidisciplinary approach to creative subtitling and, by drawing upon principles from film studies, suggests some key features for the development of a creative subtitling practice.

This article provides a first concept of typographic identity in film and the impact of audiovisual translation on it. Based on an analysis of 52 films, relevant text elements and their graphical translation strategies in film were identified. Finally, possible shortcomings and challenges such as collisions and the impact on a film’s typographic identity and image composition are discussed as a first basis for further studies

This article tackles what seems to be a revival of fragmentary fiction in English in the 21st century. It briefly traces the lineage of critical interest in the fragment from German Romanticism through Bertolt Brecht and Modernism to postmodern film studies, in an attempt to highlight not only the temporal, but also the spatial and visual dimension of discontinuity evinced by recent fragmentary fiction. Audiovisual texts possess characteristics that clearly differentiate audiovisual translation from both oral and written translation, and prospective screen translators are usually taught about the issues that typically arise in audiovisual translation.
